I haven’t posted for awhile as most of my time has been taken up by one of my biggest client projects, RentHello.com. I have been working with ECOM Media Group for quite some time, originally being brought in to collaborate in the revamping of their administrator/landlord backend system for the original RentBC.com collection of websites. I then was tasked with redesigning the city templates to bring them into the modern ages.
After dealing with the old template files (from 1998), it was apparent that trying to bring the old code to the new millenium would be far to much work then it was worth, so a re-development was in order. The first from scratch development endeavor was the creating of a mobile web app template that would deliver the listings from the My Ideal Home database, the remnants of which may still be visible at http://199.ecommediagroup.com/mobile/.
After much development time on the mobile web app, we had enough data and experience to develop a new full fledge template using the most modern HTML5 and CSS3 techniques. It started with the creation of the new myidealhomerentals.com, incorporating new techniques of loading content to the clients in realtime using jQuery and Ajax calls, and making the site fully responsive, giving users a tailored experience on desktop to mobile.
The new site template more then doubled ECOM’s site visitors within a week of going live! With such great success, the company decided they needed to re-brand this new and improved product as ‘Rent Hello’
The site employes many new techniques for searching listings, including:

Founded in 1998, ECOM Media Group Inc (ECOM) is an established and reputable leader in the online vacancy rental advertising market. Since day one, their core vision and guiding principle has remained constant: finding, developing, and implementing programs and products that make it possible for landlords and renters to find each other in the most efficient manner possible.
ECOM developed the technology that powered its inaugural service, Rent BC in 1998. The founders of the company used extensive research & software development to develop the basis of what is arguably one of the strongest technology platforms in North America serving the online vacancy rental market. Today, ECOM supports over 90 rental listing websites ranging from schools, associations, and regional listings services to sites developed in conjunction with our strategic partners. The primary source of their success, however, is a direct result of the growing number of property management and colleges & universities utilizing our off-campus housing solutions.
By investing heavily in our own intellectual property over the years – the major result of which is their hierarchy-based, proprietary software — , ECOM has been able to work with a wide range of participants in their target market. This market ranges from large apartment owners at one end to roommates and shared accommodations on the other. This model allows for a better cross-section of data, increased traffic flows and more search capability, all of which results in better success in filling vacancies and finding homes for students. Our off-campus housing website provides a turn-key solution to many schools across the United States and Canada. In addition, this solution also benefits the landlord, the school, and most of all, the student. ECOM provides off-campus housing solutions absolutely free to colleges & universities – not surprisingly, a highly attractive arrangement – which, enables them to provide safe and suitable housing for their student population. Additionally, their network model allows them to enlist many partners in the generation of ad content by market makers within the industry as well helping to brand them in the process.
Unlike most other rental websites, RentHello provides all property types, not just apartment rental units. By partnering with suppliers of rental properties, RentHello has listings such as Houses, Suites, Shared Accommodations, Room in Private Home, Townhouses, Shared Roommates, Short Term Furnished, Duplex Multiplex, Apartments / Condos and even Mobile Homes.
For a nominal fee, RentHello provides enormous exposure through many partners working together for maximum exposure. Since all the sites are connected based on geography, it doesn’t matter which site you visit. The Network is even partnered with over 80 North American colleges / universities, expanding the overall exposure.
FurGlory was founded by two Canadian party kids who have spent the last 10 years together experiencing the largest events around the world. And with each experience, they came up with new influences and ideas for products that could make the party better. Now that they are a bit more grown up and are using their big boy skills to create some truly innovative and amazing products.
Franzi, aka. “Maverick Sasquatch“ has been a vortex of party awesome for years while doing real life duties as an electrical engineer in the renewable energy sector. He has spent countless hours in research & development in the field of lasers and all things party.
Darren aka. “Batsey” has enjoyed creating the ultimate party experience for years at his communal living “Bates Manor” where he holds down the fort with 12 happenin’ roommates and occasionally throws some entertaining shindigs.
Their first product got started with an idea hatched in the party the holy land, Shambhala, with creative inspiration from a certain fairy, Miss Jenna Lee. It began as a far-fetched concept which turned into a one-off costume. After wearing the outfit to several large events they realized that the party world wanted and needed more of these and it was time to start something serious. This led us to them taking their concept to Dragon’s Den, and after a resounding success it snowballed into creating an entire company around the concept!
I was tasked with quickly getting the FurGlory website up and running and ready to sell product before the airing of the Dragon’s Den episode.
I set up a quick WordPress site for Franzi, complete with WooCommerce for sales. I found the perfect theme in the X theme on ThemeForest, which allowed for the quick customization and implementation of all the features Franzi needed for the site. The whole project took only a matter of hours over the course of a few days as we gathered content and information.
I am continuing to update the FurGlory site with constant Search Engine Optimization, along with helping the guys launch their blogging and social media empire.

Alisha Khan Photography’s website alishakhan.com was a group effort to get a website up and running in a matter of days, with low cost and development time available to us. Here is the result.
We had a site up originally, but it was quite simplistic, and didn’t allow for expansion to the degree that was required of her photography business. We needed to have a call to action on the home page of all here deals and showcasing her best photos. we needed to advertise here different type of photography services. And we needed to have a system of displaying pricing packages. In terms of scalability, she eventually wanted a store front for selling prints, or making other transaction for products.
All of this by the end of the week.
We quickly rushed to find the perfect WordPress theme that would have all these requirements and be scalable. We chose a theme called “The7″, a responsive multi purpose theme.
Some of the features this theme included were:
Responsive. Fluid. Retina-Ready.
Your site will always look sharp and utilize 100% of screen estate on every device. There are no jerky “responsiveness points”. Plus The7 features adaptive navigation menu on smaller screen sizes.
No theme around offers such a vide range of customization options. The7 allows you to customize almost every aspect of its appearance via handy theme options panel.

The7 comes with Visual Layout Builder. Create almost any layout you can imagine in only couple of clicks!
The7 features two slideshows developed exclusively for it: Porthole and 3D. Layer Slider, Metro (based on Swiper) and Revolution slider were heavily customized to fit theme perfectly.

Plenty of Blog, Portfolio & Galleries Layouts.
You can choose:
With the theme bought, it was just a matter of Alisha going in and adding her content, which we guided through to make sure it was full of keywords and optimized for the web.
We then began the process of connecting all the social networks and marketing the site, as well as creating AdWords campaigns to best her ranking.
These can be a handful to manage, but we setup special plugins within her blog that will automatically post to all of them wherever she adds new content to the site!
The ad campaign we did on AdWords instantly shot Alisha’s site to the top of search results.
The process is on going as within only a months time, we have made Alisha Khan one of the most booked and recommended photographers in Kelowna.

An older painting I did back in my days in college. It depicts two lovers dancing in the darkness, the woman with a look of uncertainty in her eyes as the story of these loves goes much deeper than what we see.
